Early 1900s — Innovation Starts

In 1904, the Concentrated Acetylene Company was formed. It was re-named Prest-O-Lite in 1906, making headlights for the world’s first automobiles. Work with acetylene would lead to the discovery of today’s surface coating technologies.

1910s–1940s — A New Home

Prest-O-Lite research and manufacturing operations move to Speedway, Indiana. The company was sold to Union Carbon & Carbide Corporation (1917) and established the Acetylene Research Division (1919). It would later become the Presto-O-Lite Linde Division (1947).

1950s–1960s — Breakthroughs

The detonation gun process is patented (1952), leading to D-Gun and Super D-Gun™ coatings. Plasma coating technique (1957) and high-velocity oxy fuel (HVOF) follow. Business becomes the coating service department of Union Carbide (1967).

1970s–1990s — Global Growth

Through the decades, global capabilities have expanded, including the development of a unique quality control process. Linde spun off the business, forming Praxair Surface Technologies (1992), which became vertically integrated. ASM recognizes Speedway Lab as a historic landmark (1999).

21st Century — Advances Continue

Praxair acquires Sermatech Intl., which is adding new high-performance offerings (2009). Praxair and Linde merged, becoming Linde Advanced Material Technologies (AMT). The legacy of innovation and constant improvement continues.
